With recent advances in small modular reactor technology, interest in nuclear power for merchant ship propulsion and for floating nuclear power stations is re-emerging. ICS is pleased that revision of the international regulations governing nuclear merchant ships and floating nuclear power stations is underway. However, the legislative landscape from this sector is complex, and a clear understanding of the technology’s potential depends on understanding the interrelationships among regulatory bodies and the processes and timelines for regulatory development.
