Piraeus Container Terminal S.A. (PCT), a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited, celebrates 15 years of dynamic and successful operations in Piraeus. Throughout this 15-year journey, PCT has become a cornerstone of Greece’s maritime and port economy, consistently investing in infrastructure, innovation, and sustainable development. Alongside its subcontractors, PCT ranks among the largest employers in the Balkans, with a workforce exceeding 2,500 people.
With a long-term commitment to sustainable development, PCT has adopted a comprehensive Environmental and Social Responsibility strategy. Through investments exceeding €600 million, strategic infrastructure projects — such as the construction and operation of Pier III, connection to national and Balkan rail networks, and installation of state-of-the-art ship-to-shore cranes — have transformed Piraeus into a major European and Mediterranean transshipment hub. The Terminal’s handling capacity has increased from 1.5 to 6.2 million TEUs, exponentially boosting annual container throughput and securing its place among the top five European ports and the top port in the Mediterranean. Between 2009 and 2024, PCT’s fiscal contribution — including concession fees, taxes, and insurance contributions — reached €1.03 billion. Additionally, for 2024–2025, the company has signed contracts worth €275 million with over 600 suppliers, primarily from the local community. PCT’s achievements have been recognized with awards such as “Greek Business Champion,” “Diamonds of the Greek Economy,” and “True Leaders.”
PCT’s focus on social welfare, education, and environmental responsibility has resulted in significant support for educational and charitable institutions, non-profits, and vulnerable social groups. Since 2010, the company has donated to charitable organizations and initiatives that support at-risk populations, including the distribution of food packages to over 5,000 families. More than €90,000 has been invested in school renovations and equipment in the surrounding area, contributing directly to public education. In 2024, PCT also launched a scholarship program for first-year university students, planning to further augment its contribution this year to more students. The company continues to support institutions such as the Piraeus Nursing Home, the Love For Life Association, the Hatzikyriakeio Foundation for Child Protection, and The Smile of the Child. Over the years, PCT has also provided emergency supplies to vulnerable populations affected by natural disasters and extraordinary circumstances. Including this year’s programs, the Company’s Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives are expected to exceed €850,000 in total.
As an organization with a clear evolving and operational footprint, PCT implements a multi-tiered Environmental and socially responsible strategy, investing in energy-efficient technologies, green infrastructure, and advanced digital management tools. This includes full electrification of its main port equipment and the development of a High Voltage Substation to provide Shore Power Supply, a project with a total budget of €48 million. PCT is also deploying AI-enabled telemetry and microclimate forecasting systems to improve energy transparency, further enhance employees’ safety, and increase resilience to climate change impacts. Its sustainability strategy is underpinned by a digital governance model with systems like the Terminal Operating System (TOS) and PCT HPCS ensuring efficient resource management, interoperability with supply chains, and reduced environmental impact.
To honor the collective efforts of its employees and leadership team — the very foundation of its 15-year journey — PCT hosted an anniversary celebration at its facilities on Friday, June 20th. During the celebration, Capt. Wang Jihang, Managing Director of PCT, stated: “Celebrating 15 years of continuous growth is a milestone of pride for all of us. Since 2009, we have pursued a consistent vision: to establish Piraeus among the largest ports in Europe and the Mediterranean, and among the most significant globally. Today, as we reflect on the port’s transformation, we see a journey filled with achievements and a meaningful contribution to the Greek economy and society — made possible by the dedication and professionalism of our people. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, we continue to invest responsibly and with respect for the environment, society, and our partners. The future of Piraeus is dynamic, and we are proud to actively shape and contribute to it.”
