Ukraine - Customs fines at Nikolaev

Scrubbers: Shipowners urge clarity and legal certainty at the eleventh hour

ECSA-logoIn a recently published position paper, the European shipowners' association, ECSA, asked EU Member States to adopt a clear, long-term and, above all, harmonised position on the issue of the discharges of washwater produced by open-loop scrubbers installed on ships.

IMO MEPC 67 Outcome

The sixty-seventh session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) was held at IMO Headquarters from 13 to 17 October 2014. Key points of interest emerging from the meeting are as follows:

ICS urges governments to see sense on the ballast convention

ICS logoThe International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) reiterated its call for governments to address the serious implementation issues concerning the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention before it is too late. Speaking at a Ballast Water Management Summit in Singapore, the ICS Vice Chairman, Esben Poulsson, encouraged IMO Member States to make use of the solutions proposed in an industry submission to the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), which next meets from 13-17 October.

UN Climate Summit "Global Shipping's Emissions 20% lower"

Specifically, the global shipping industry, which transports around 90% of all world trade by sea, is thought to have produced only about 2.2% of the world's total GHG emissions during 2012 compared to 2.8% in 2007.
