SOLAS: Lifeboat safety Update

IMO Circular MSC.1/Circ.1392 – SOLAS Regulation III/1.5 requires that for all ships, on-load release mechanisms not complying with paragraphs 4.4.7.6.4 to 4.4.7.6.6 of the Life Saving Appliances (LSA) Code must be replaced or modified not later than the next scheduled dry-docking after 1 July 2014, but not later than 1 July 2019.
INTERTANKO-OCIMF Guidance

A recently released INTERTANKO–OCIMF information paper publishes guidelines to oil tanker operators and other interested parties on the potential consequences of switching fuel between residual and distillate fuels where ships' installations have typically been designed and manufactured to be used with residual fuels (HFO).
Suez Canal: Random Inspections/Co-operation

Following reports of ships being detained and fined whilst transiting the Suez Canal, attention is drawn to recent communications, which affect all ships transiting the Suez Canal, from the Operations Department of the Egyptian Navy Port Said.
Argentina: Determination of bulk cargo weight or volume to be decided by Customs Authorities

The UK P &I Club advises that the Argentine Customs authorities have issued a new resolution affecting the way in which the weight or volume of imported and exported bulk cargo is calculated.
BIMCO Piracy Clauses Revised

BIMCO's piracy clauses, first issued in 2009, have been revised and updated to reflect changes in trade practice and specialist insurance cover as well as a number of other issues.

The 2013 editions of CONWARTIME and VOYWAR have been published and are available to download free of charge from the BIMCO website along with explanatory notes. BIMCO recommends that if you are using charter parties containing the 1993 or 2004 editions of CONWARTIME or VOYWAR, you replace these clauses with the new 2013 edition.
Outcome of IMO MSC 92, June 12-21, 2013

The IMO Secretary General, Mr Koji Sekimizu, stated in his closing remarks at the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), 92nd session, held from June 12 to 21, 2013, that "The Costa Concordia safety review has been the most important safety issue at this session. The Committee has taken firm actions to set a clear direction towards a safety review over critical areas such as stability and survivability.
